Product Description Little brat Harvey accidently goes overboard on an ocean liner and is picked up by a fishing boat where he remains stranded with the fishermen crew.
Amazon.com The award-winning 1937 version of Kipling's classic Captains Courageous finds spoiled-rotten brat Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) well on the way to becoming a horrible adult, under the illusion that money can buy all happiness. The little monster falls off a cruise ship, and is fished out of the drink by Portuguese fisherman Manuel (Spencer Tracy) and brought back to his fishing boat. Though the overprivileged lad initially chafes at being put to work aboard the smelly vessel, he eventually learns the value of a day's work and learns lessons in life that make him a functional person and bring him several steps closer to manhood. Despite Tracy's indeterminate accent, he excels in his role as the boy's friend, and enthusiastic performances from the rest of the cast bring this coming-of-age tale to life. It's a film that has lost none of its sentimental appeal (or occasional hamminess) over the years and should have an all-ages appeal to fans of Hollywood classics. --Jerry Renshaw

An excellent movie July 23, 2010 Alice in Wonderland This 1937 movie is a retelling of Rudyard Kipling's 1897 novel of the same name. In this movie, Harvey Cheyne, the spoiled son of a wealthy but distant father, falls overboard off a Europe-bound ship, and is rescued by a down-to-earth Portuguese fisherman, Manuel Fidello. Unimpressed with the young castaway's unlikely claims of wealth, the captain of the fishing boat offers Harvey a low paying job, in exchange for which Harvey will be fed and taken care of. During the course of the long voyage, Harvey learns a great lesson in humility and caring for others.
This is an excellent movie, one that is still wonderful to watch all these years later. Spencer Tracy (playing Manuel) and Freddie Bartholomew (playing Harvey) both bring a real potency to their roles, giving the movie a startling realism. If you want a nice family-friendly movie, one that with an enthralling storyline and a good lesson, then checkout this classic!

If you are a father, if you have a son...see this. You will never forget it. April 20, 2010 Joshua G. Grant (boston, ma United States) An achingly tender and beautiful film that makes one wonder why on earth films like this aren't made anymore.
Captains Courageous DVD March 22, 2010 Manny M. Agah An excellent film, which earned Spencer Tracy an Academy Award. The 4:3 B&W picture is very good.
Captains Courageous December 19, 2009 Nancy from the midwest (Oklahoma) I am very pleased. I was truly surprised how quickly I got the movie and started sharing with my grandchildren the joy of a classic movie.
An all-time great! September 21, 2009 Jonathan M. Norberg (Grand Forks, ND) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I hadn't seen this film for many years, and my last memory was that this was a very good film I enjoyed when I was young. Well, after re-watching this recently, I was reminded that this is a tremendous film that really packs a punch.
I have seen some criticism about the changing of Kipling's classic and also about the poor Portuguese accent Tracy had. All I can say is, that is not nearly enough of a detractor for a nearly perfect film! I've seen a lot of dramas and a lot of melodramas. I don't know exactly what makes one movie great and another pretentious, but this movie is just fantastic. Perhaps Kipling would be slightly disappointed with some of the minor plot changes, but I don't think even he would be disappointed with the character and moral of the movie.
This is a true "coming of age" film, where a selfish, arrogant rich kid learns how to live for others and grows up quickly under the care and discipline of people who truly care for him. The message doesn't age--even if the setting does--and I would not hesitate to watch this brilliant film again soon. I would also recommend this highly to others--unless their idea of a coming of age film is that of a sex comedy.
